Winds of the world by Dr. Gaurav Garg
INTRODUCTION
● The State Government declares an area as a sanctuary if such area is of adequate
ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, natural. or zoological significance, for the purpose of
protecting, propagating or developing wildlife or its environment.
● Sometimes for protection of a particular animal an area is declared a wildlife sanctuary, for e.g. The Tral
Sanctuary in Jammu and Kashmir was declared to protect Hangul (state animal, also known as kashmiri
stag), Bukkapatna wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka is made to protect Chinkara.
● Very limited human activity is allowed inside a wildlife sanctuary, local tribals/people can collect firewood,
fruits, medicinal plants etc on a very small scale, limited Cattle grazing permitted.
● There is no physical fencing to restrict the public from entering and roaming inside a wildlife sanctuary
for research & educational purposes.
● There are more than existing wildlife sanctuaries in India covering an area of 119775.80 km 2 , which is
3.64% of the geographical area of the country.
● IUCN has defined wildlife sanctuary as its Category IV type of protected areas. (National park is IUCN
category II type and Biosphere reserve is IUCN category V type).
