A waterfall is a stretch of river where, due to a strong unevenness in the bed or riverbed, the water falls
vertically as a result of gravity.
Waterfalls are considered one of the most beautiful phenomena in nature.
Some waterfalls are used to generate hydroelectric power.
Some waterfalls are natural but there are also man made waterfalls.
Some of the most famous waterfalls in the world -
● Iguazú Falls - it is located on the border of Argentina and Brazil.
● Niagara Falls - it is located on the border of USA & Canada.
● Yosemite Falls - it is in California (USA).
● Angel Falls - it is in Venezuela, its height is 979 m (807 m of uninterrupted fall), It is the highest waterfall in the
world. ( Kunchikal Falls is the highest waterfall in India )
● Victoria Falls - It is on the Zambezi river on the border of Zambia & Zimbabwe. Largest volume of water fall in this
waterfall.
Types of waterfalls
● Plunge - Water descends vertically, losing contact with the bedrock surface.
● Chute - A large quantity of water forced through a narrow, vertical passage. These types of waterfalls are very
dangerous.
● Horsetail - Descending water maintains some contact with bedrock.
● Cataract - A large, powerful waterfall. E.g. Niagara waterfall, Victoria waterfall.
● Cascade - Water descends a series of rock steps.
● Tiered - Water drops in a series of distinct steps or falls. These types of waterfalls appeared as if there were many
waterfalls combined.
● Fan - Water spreads horizontally as it descends while remaining in contact with bedrock.
● Segmented - Distinctly separate flows of water form as it descends.
Athirappilly Falls
● Location - Thrissur District in Kerala.
● It is the largest waterfall in Kerala, which stands tall at 80 feet (25m).
● Type - Segmented.
● Nickname - "The Niagara of India".
● Watercourse - Chalakudy River
Dhuandhar Falls
● Location - Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
● Watercourse - Narmada River (origin - Amarkantak)
● Height - 30m
Kapil Dhara - Narmada River, Amarkantak, Anuppur.
Gautam Dhara - Rarhu River, Ranchi (Jonha Falls). Real name is Johna Falls but it
is known that Bhagwan Guatam Buddha came here so It is called Gautam Dhara.
Sahastradhara - Baldi river, part of Song river, Dehradun. The place has magnificent beauty of nature where water drips from
the limestone stalactites, rich in sulphur. ‘Sahastra’ means 1000.
Dasong falls - Kanchi river ( a tributary of the Subarnarekha River ), Ranchi.

● Location - Bastar district, Chhattisgarh.
● Type - Block
● Height - 91 m
● Watercourse - Kanger River (Kanger valley National Park)
Chitrakoot Waterfalls
● Location - Bastar district, Chhattisgarh.
● Watercourse - Indravati River (Indravati national park)
Kunchikal Falls
● Location - Shimoga District, Karnataka
● Type - cascade (It is also horsetail and segmented)
● Total height - 455 m
● Watercourse - Varahi River
● It is the highest waterfall in India.
Barehipani Falls
● Location - Simlipal National Park, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha
● Type - Two tiered waterfall
● Height - 399 metres
● Watercourse - Budhabalanga River
● It is the second highest waterfall in India.
Joranda Falls
● Location - Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. It is located in the core area of
Simlipal National Park.
● Height - 150 metres
● Type - Plunge
Nohkalikai Falls
● Location - near Cherrapunji, Meghalaya
● Type - Plunge. It is the tallest plunge waterfall in India.
● Fed by - rainwater collected on the summit of a comparatively small plateau and
decrease in power during the dry season in December - February.
● Height - 340 m
Nohsngithiang Falls
● Other names - Seven Sisters Waterfalls or Mawsmai Falls
● Location - East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya
● Height - 315 metres
● Type - Segmented
Dudhsagar Falls ( Sea of Milk )
● Located in - It is located at Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park
in Goa.
● Type - Tiered
● Height - 320 metres
● Watercourse - Mandovi River (also known as Mahadayi river, river flows in
Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa)
Kynrem Falls
● Location - Cherrapunji in East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. It is situated inside
the Thangkharang Park
● Type - Tiered
● Height - 305 metres
Vajrai Waterfall
● Other Name - Bhambavli Vajrai Waterfall
● Location - Satara (city), Maharashtra, and near Sahyadri hill.
● Height - 260m
● Type - Plunge. It is the second highest plunge waterfall in India, after the Nohkalikai
Falls in Meghalaya.
● Watersource - Urmodi River

● Location - Sita River, Agumbe, Shimoga district of state of Karnataka.
