Thermal Power Plants by Dr. Gaurav Garg
Raniganj was the first coalfield in India where coal mining started during the East India Company i.e. in
the year 1774. It is in West Bengal.
Coal India Limited (CIL) the state owned coal mining Maharatna company came into being in November 1975.
One of the largest coal producer in the world and one of the largest corporate employer with manpower of almost 2.75 lakh.

● The mines in Assam i.e. North Eastern Coalfields is managed directly by Coal India Limited .
We can notice that most of the coal mines in India are in Eastern Parts of Country. So, if Government want to set up power
plant in Rajasthan, there are some questions come to our mind -
will it not be a problem?
should we open power plant so far from coal mines or not?
Answer to these questions is Yes we should setup power plants in Rajasthan. There is one thing called “Transmission Loss”,
So if we have to transmit electricity in Rajasthan and a power plant is in Odisha then Transmission Loss will be very high,
which will not be feasible. Second thing is that Thermal Power Plants also need water to make electricity. So, water reservoir
must be present near the Thermal Power Plant.
Coal -fired plants produce electricity by burning coal in a boiler to produce steam. The steam produced , under tremendous
pressure, flows into a turbine, which spins a generator to create electricity .
Types of Coal - Anthracite (best quality), Bituminous and Lignite.
Neyveli Thermal Power Plant is lignite based.
