■ Air India → Commenced operations in 1946, HQ – Delhi. Before government acquisition, it
was known as Tata Airlines.
■ Vistara → Commenced operations in 2015, HQ – Gurugrum, Tata Sons (51%) Singapore Airlines (49%).
■ IndiGo (Interglobe Aviation) Commenced operations in 2006, HQ – Gurugrum.
■ GoAir → Commenced operations in 2005, HQ – Mumbai, Owned by Wadia Group.
■ Air India Express → Commenced operations in 2005, HQ – Kochi. It is a subsidiary company of Air India
Limited.
■ Spicejet → Commenced operations in 2005, HQ – Gurugrum.
■ AirAsia India → Commenced operations in 2014, HQ – Bengaluru, (Tata Sons 51% stake and AirAsia 49%
stake). AirAsia is a Malaysian Company.

■ Alliance Air → Commenced operations in 1996, HQ – Delhi. It is a subsidiary company of Air India
Limited.
■ Air Deccan → Commenced operations in 2017, HQ – Ahmedabad.
■ Air Heritage → Commenced operations in 2019, HQ – Dehradun.
■ Star Air → Commenced operations in 2019, HQ – Bengaluru.
■ Supreme Airlines → Commenced operations in 2016, HQ – Jaipur.
■ Tru Jet → Commenced operations in 2015, HQ – Hyderabad.
■ Tru Start → Commenced operations in 2020, HQ – Hyderabad.
■ Zoom Air → Commenced operations in 2017, HQ – Delhi.
MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION
● It is the nodal Ministry responsible for the formulation of national policies and programmes for
development and regulation of Civil Aviation and for devising and implementing schemes for the orderly
growth and expansion of civil air transport.
● Its functions also extend to overseeing airport facilities, air transport.
● 5/20 rule → The 5/20 rule is a norm of the Indian Aviation Ministry under which national carriers are
required to have five years of operational experience and a fleet of minimum 20 aircraft to fly overseas.
This is applicable to all commercial aviation organisations flying passengers. This rule has been set up by
the Civil Aviation ministry.
ORGANISATIONS UNDER MINISTRY OF CIVIL AVIATION
Airport Authority of India :-
● (Miniratna - Category -1 Public Sector Enterprise)
● Founded - 1 April 1995, Headquarters - New Delhi
● AAI is a statutory body (created through the Airports Authority of India Act,
1994) working under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and is responsible for creating,
upgrading, maintaining and managing civil aviation infrastructure in India.
● The functions of AAI are as follows :-
✓ Design, Development, Operation and Maintenance of international and domestic airports and civil
enclaves.
✓ Control and Management of the Indian airspace extending beyond the territorial limits of the
country, as accepted by ICAO.
✓ Construction, Modification and Management of passenger terminals.
✓ Development and Management of cargo terminals at international and domestic airports.
✓ Provision of passenger facilities and information system at the passenger terminals at airports.
Expansion and strengthening of operation area, viz. Runways, Aprons, Taxiway etc. Provision of
visual aids.
✓ Provision of Communication and Navigation aids, viz. ILS, DVOR, DME, Radar etc.
