What is a National Park?
● An area, whether within a sanctuary or not, can be notified by the state government to be constituted as a National
Park, by reason of its ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, or zoological association or importance, needed to
for the purpose of protecting & propagating or developing wildlife therein or its environment.
● National Parks in India are declared under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. They are IUCN category II protected
areas.
● There were 5 National Parks already in India before this Act.
● There are 104 national parks in India (National Wildlife Database, Dec. 2020) covering an area of 43716 km2
.
● 1.33% of the geographical area of the country.
● Hailey National Park (presently known as Jim Corbett National Park), established in 1936 is India’s first National
Park.
● 105th National Park will be "Dehing Patkai National Park" (Assam).
● The anthropogenic activities like developmental activities, industrial activities, forestry, poaching,
hunting, and cultivation are not permitted. The boundaries of National Parks are well defined and no private
activities are allowed inside the NationalPark.
● Only Mild Tourism is allowed and that too very much regulated.
National Parks in Uttarakhand :-
● Rajaji → It is also a Tiger Reserve, it was named after "C
Rajagopalachari".
● Jim Corbett → First National Park of India, It is also a
Tiger Reserve, it was named after British Tiger Hunter
'Jim Corbett'.
● Gangotri → Bhagirathi river flows here, Gangotri is
considered as the origin place of Ganga river, Musk
Deer is found here (State Animal of Uttarakhand).
● Govind Pashu Vihar → famous for Snow Leopard,
named after Govind Ballabh Pant.
● Valley of Flowers → It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
● Nanda Devi → It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nanda Devi is the 2nd highest peak in India.
National Parks in West Bengal :-
● Gorumara → famous for Rhino, it is situated in the
Dooars region of Himalayan foothills.
● Jaldapara → famous for Rhino, it is situated on the banks
of Torsa River, it was made in 2012 after that only one
National Park has been made 'Palpur-Kuno' in Madhya
Pradesh.
● Neora Valley → It is situated in Kalimpong district.
● Buxa → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Sundarban → It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also
a Tiger Reserve, Biosphere Reserve, Sundari Trees are
found here, and also Mangroves Forests.
● Singalila → It is in Darjeeling, it is well known for the
trekking route to Sandakphu that runs through it.
National Parks in Tamil Nadu :-
● Mukurthi → It was made only to save Nilgiri Tahr (state
animal of Tamil Nadu), previously known as Nilgiri Tahr
National Park, it lies in Western ghats so it can be said that
it is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
● Gulf of Mannar → famous for Dugong (sea cow),
mangroves also found here.
● Guindy → It is located in Chennai.
● Mudumalai → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Indra Gandhi (Annamalai) → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
National Parks in Telangana :-
● Kasu Brahmananda Reddy → It was named after 3
time CM of Undivided Andhra Pradesh 'Kasu
Brahmananda Reddy'.
● Mahaveer Harina Vanasthali → famous for Blackbuck
(state animal of Punjab, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh),
named after Mahaveer Bhagwan.
● Mrugavani → famous for Spotted Deer (Chital).
National Parks in Rajasthan :-
● Desert → famous for the Great Indian Bustard
(critically endangered).
● Mukundra Hills → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Ranthambore → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Keoladeo Ghana → It is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, previously known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.
● Sariska → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
National Parks in Maharashtra :-
● Sanjay Gandhi → It is in Borivali, Mumbai.
● Chandoli.
● Tadoba → It is also a Tiger Reserve 'Tadoba Andhari
Tiger Reserve'.
● Gugamal.
● Nawegaon.
● Pench (Jawaharlal Nehru) → Its major portion is in
Madhya Pradesh and that is called Indira
Priyadarshini Pench National Park.
National Parks in Madhya Pradesh :-
● Kanha → famous for Barasingha or Swamp deer, it is the
only place in Madhya Pradesh where Barasingha is found.
(Bhoor Singh mascot was made after this).
● Bandhavgarh → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Van Vihar.
● Satpura.
● Indira Priyadarshini Pench.
● Fossil.
● Sanjay.
● Panna.
● Madhav.
● Palpur-Kuno
National Parks in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh :-
● Hemis → It is in Ladakh, it is the largest National
Park of India.
● Dachigam → famous for Hangul (state animal of
J&K), to protect Hangul new wildlife sanctuary has
been made "Tral Wildlife Sanctuary".
● City Forest (Salim Ali) → Jammu & Kashmir, Dr. Salim
Ali Bird Sanctuary is in Goa. A Person who Studies
Birds is called 'Ornithologist'.
● Kishtwar → Jammu & Kashmir.
National Parks in Chhattisgarh and Odisha :-
● Guru Ghasidas → Chhattisgarh, it is also a Tiger
Reserve, it was that area of Sanjay-Dubri which came in
Chhattisgarh after formation of a new state.
● Kanger Valley → Chhattisgarh, (kanger is the name of
river).
● Indravati (Kutru) → Chhattisgarh.
● Similipal → Odisha, it is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Bhitarkanika → Odisha, famous for Saltwater
Crocodile.
National Parks in Andaman & Nicobar Islands :-
● Campbell Bay.
● Galathea Bay.
● Mahatma Gandhi Marine (Wandoor).
● Mount Harriet.
● Rani Jhansi Marine.
● Saddle Peak.
● North Button Island.
● Middle Button Island.
● South Button Island.
National Parks in Assam :-
● Rajiv Gandhi Orang → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Manas → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Nameri → It is also a Tiger Reserve.
● Kaziranga → It is also a Tiger Reserve, famous for One
Horned Rhino (state animal of Assam).
● Dibru-Saikhowa.
National Parks in Tripura :-
● Clouded Leopard → famous for Clouded Leopard (state animal of Meghalaya).
● Bison (Rajbari) → Its old name was Bison, famous for the animal 'Bison'.
National Parks in Sikkim :-
● Khangchendzonga → It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kanchenjunga is the highest peak in India, and 3rd highest
peak in the World.
National Parks in Nagaland and Manipur :-
● Keibul-Lamjao → It is located in Bishnupur district (Manipur), it is the only floating National Park of India, it is in
Loktak Lake, floating Vegetation is found here (Phumdi).
● Sirohi → It is located in Imphal District (Manipur).
● Intanki (Ntangki) → It is located in Peren district (Nagaland).
